September 1990 British Columbia Canada
I decided to tell of my encounter after I made contact with Jarrod on a different conversation group. Jarrod shared his experience with me and it has given me the courage to talk about what I encountered almost 30 years ago. That being said, here we go , this is what took place in early September of 1990. I was on a 3 week sheep hunt in the Coast Mountains of British Columbia , a place I had hunted since the age of 10. I was 20 years old at the time and was on another solo sheep hunt and was 12 days into the trip. I was camped at the base of a high Alpine bowl in amongst the small Jack pines in a small one man tent. The trip was going great until that 12th night in my tent and I got a VERY uncomfortable feeling. I hadn’t heard anything or seen anything but I felt like I was someplace that I shouldn’t be . I don’t know if my mind started playing tricks on me but I heard noises around my tent , the odd branch breaking and what I thought might be an animal walking within 30 yards of my tent. I never slept that night which was so uncommon to me. I’ve always felt most at home in the wilderness and never felt uncomfortable like this. I’ve had encounters with grizzlies , wolverines and many other North American big game animals but this feeling I got was different, very different. Anyways, I spent the next day high on a saddle over looking a bowl on the other side of where my camp was. It was late in the afternoon and I had glassed vigorously all day long , not seeing so much as a deer . Suddenly I glanced to the left and down at the bottom of the bowl at the edge of the small pines I saw what I was certain was a large grizzly bear. I grabbed my binoculars and brought them to my eyes. As soon as I got them on the “grizzly” it stood up on its rear legs and began walking quartering away from me to the right and I knew instantly what I was looking at. My heart was pounding out of my chest and I dropped my binos on the ground and reached for my 300 win mag . I laid on the ground and nestled into my rifle and put the Leupold scope to 9 power. This is when I literally crapped my pants and realized what was happening. The creature was taking huge strides of probably 7-8 feet and its arms were down to almost its knees . It was very dark black/brown in color but did have grey on its shoulders and back. Just as the creature was getting close to the timber line , it turned and looked DIRECTLY at me . Not just in my direction but I mean directly through my scope and into my eyes as if peering right through my soul. A feeling came over me that I still can’t explain. I was a feeling of calmness , fear, dis belief, and sadness. I just can’t really explain how I felt, all of those emotions and more. This creatures face looked so old and weathered, like a weathered piece of leather , very grey in the face and its eyes were deep into its head but very visible. The expression on the creatures face was SADNESS, I know it sounds crazy but it looked soooo sad, like an old old man that has just lost his life long soul mate. It felt like time stood still as the creature stared me down but it was walking the entire time so I know the encounter lasted only seconds and it was gone . I’ve spent a very large part of my life alone in the wilderness hunting and exploring this great Province and I KNOW what I saw . This creature knew I was there the entire time , this im sure of. I also firmly believe that it somehow knew I was not a threat. Many people that I told of the encounter said to me “why didn’t you shoot it”? To be totally honest, the thought never even entered my mind, not at the time and not once since that day. I would never pull the trigger on an animal just to kill it , EVER. I strongly believe there is more to this beings than what we think, there’s something about them that none of us know. I told a few people about what happened and I was laughed at and made fun of by all but two people. The one was a Conservation officer that I knew very well for years. When I told him what I saw , he said hmm , where about was that? For some reason that I can’t explain or understand , I knew right then and there not to tell him where I saw it so I told him a different area . The look on this guys face was , oh ya, I know they’re out there. The other person that believed me was a native friend of mine that was a trapper with his father. He listened to me about the entire encounter and at the end said “ your lucky it didn’t feel threatened , don’t ever go looking my friend” . I listened to him and never went looking for them but 2 years later within 5 miles of that alpine bowl, I was deer hunting and something screamed at me in the timber from about 150 yards away. It was like nothing I have ever heard before or since. I immediately turned and hiked 2hours to my truck, looking over my shoulder every other step. I was scared beyond words, terrified. That creature that screamed at me was pissed off and wanted me to get the hell out of there. I knew better than to not listen . I still spend a lot of time in this area and have never had another encounter and don’t ever want to have another one. I thought my experience would go to my grave with me but maybe my sharing will allow others to speak of theirs . Keep it wild everyone , enjoy the wilderness but more importantly, respect the hell out of its inhabItants !!
