Mid '60's to present, California and Michigan
I first heard of Sasquatch when I was a child. My Uncle Tony, who is Cherokee, and grew up on a reservation in Oklahoma, told us that the scary scream/howl we were listening to was a Sasquatch.
We were camping at the Klamath river in Northern California, when we heard that scream. I grew up in the woods, but had never heard anything like that before.
It was getting late, and the full moon made it a bright night. We were all sitting around our campfire, roasting marshmallows. We were loud, rambunctious kids. And this night was no exception... Our parents were cleaning up for the night, and getting our tents ready for bed.
Then we heard that crazy scream/howl (that's the only way I can explain it..). It was on top of the nearest mountain, and on our side. It lasted for a minute or so. And it was so loud!!
We kids didn't know what we were hearing. We all shut up and looked at our parents. My Uncle had a weird look on his face. When we asked what the heck was that!!?? He told us it was Sasquatch. He didn't elaborate. But told us kids we were sleeping in the Jeeps that night. It was a long uncomfortable night.
Our parents didn't douse the fire, as usual. But built it up higher. And they stayed up late, with rifles.
That was my first experience.
My second was at Shaver Lake, California. My husband, children and I were camping at Camp Edison, right off of the lake. That night we heard that same exact scream/howl my family and I had heard at Klamath river, years before. It was unnerving... It came from across the lake, and sounded like it was up on a mountain. It went on for a minute or two.
The third time, my daughter (who was now grown, married and a mother) and I were hiking the trails of the "wild" side of Shaver Lake. We did this just about every weekend. I knew that area very well.
As soon as we hit the trail, we started hearing "wooping" sounds. Like an ape would make. My daughter wondered what I thought it was.I figured it must be water cranes or some sort of birds.
But, the wooping was non-stop, and seemed to be getting closer. Than was all around us. It was weird.. We reached a favorite spot of ours. A beautiful meadow. As we were stepping over a small creek, I noticed some huge foot prints. Bare footprints. And I say, " why would anyone walk barefoot out here??" Then my brain started to process what we were seeing... These were huge prints! And they were going up the side of a mountain. Barefoot.
I didn't want to sound crazy, so I kept this to myself. But as we got closer to the side of the meadow we were headed for, we started smelling a horrendous stench! I'm a vet tech, and believe me, I have smelled many putrid smells in that line of work. But nothing like this. At this point I was starting to get nervous, but I'm also very, very curious. So we followed that smell. What we found still boggles my brain. We ended up in a stand of trees that made a perfect circle. And inside that circle of trees was the biggest pile of feces I have ever seen in my life!! Now, I know scat. But this I didn't recognize.
That was it!!! Now we were really scared. It was all coming together now. We got out of there quick. And as we made our way back, we were followed by the wooping sounds again. On all sides. But they were louder now.
I mentioned I know this area very well. But in our panic, we got off trail somehow, and ended up in thorn bushes. Which did not stop us.. we literally climbed right over them!
By the time we reached the road where my truck was parked, we were covered in scratches and bleeding. It had taken us an hour to get to the meadow. And less than half that time to get out!! We were tired and scared. But what an adventure!!! However, we never really enjoyed our hikes in that area again. And decided to hike other trails miles away from that place.
Now, I live in Michigan. In a thickly forested area. Our house is literally in the woods. And yes, I've heard that same scream/howl behind our home in the woods. My husband (who doesn't believe in such things) heard it too. First we heard a pack of coyotes howling and yipping. And right in the middle of all that, the horrible sound of a scream/howl. And in that instant, the coyotes shut up. Didn't hear them again. Still haven't heard any in our area since...
And, the weird stuff going on, on our property. We have trails in our woods, out back. I am out there almost every day with my wolfdog. So I notice when trees are bowed over and held down with a freshly broken tree. Also the small (and sometimes not so small) trees that are twisted and bent. There are X's on the paths made from either limbs, twigs, branches or sometimes small trees. I find new ones daily. And usually across the paths that I had just walked down. Let me just say, these are not natural occurrences. No wind, no heavy snow, no fallen trees or branches. These are placed there. Even on our lawn. One day I found little twigs and branches, all touching, laying perfectly on my dog's leadline, that was laying on the ground in our backyard. Which is 20 ft. from the forest behind our home. They didn't fall that way. It was obviously placed.
Another time, I kept hearing big crunches in our woods out back. Something big walking. I was curious and wanted to see if we had a herd of deer moving through. Or maybe a bear. I leashed my dog, and we walked out into the woods. My dog was sensing something, so she kept trying to pull me in that direction. I, however, was trying to be cautious.. so I knelt down next to her, and was lining up my sight with hers, to see what she was seeing. I saw a figure, that was standing on two legs, and was very wide!! I couldn't tell how tall. But it seemed unnaturally wide for it's hight. It was standing between trees, I couldn't make out any features because the light was behind it. I figured it was looking at us, because my dog was barking, yipping and I was trying to calm her down. It then took one step to the left, and was gone. The trees are very thick here. I couldn't see it after that. And we ran back to the house. It spooked me. And made a diffinant impression on my dog. Now when we step into the woods, she stops, looks and smells intently before moving forward. (She didn't do that before. She used to pull me forcefully, because she was always excited to walk out there. Now she's very cautious.)
There is actually so much going on that it would take awhile to list everything.
Well, there ya go!! My experiences with that strange ominous "hairy man".
Thank you for your time.
