Farrandsville Pennsylvania, November 1981

Hello, my encounter happened in 1981 when I was 13 years old hunting with my father. We belonged to a hunting camp along with 15 other guys that was An old logging camp from 1861 that was on state game lands near Lock Haven Pennsylvania.
This happened to me on the 2nd day of buck season that year. The 1st night at the hunting camp I was up all night playing cards against the old men in the camp and they were cheating me out of my jar of nickels.
The next morning my dad and I got up at 5:00 a.m. To head out to the spot he wanted to go to. Needless to say I was already exhausted from being up all night. We walked through the woods about a mile and a 1/2 through all kinds of patches of mountain Laurel when we finally came upon the spot where he wanted to stop there was several game trails that converged into one and they headed off down over the ridge. My father wanted me to stay here at the edge of this patch of Laurel where these game trails came together there was a small opening in the Laurel right next to the game trail that I was able to tuck myself back into so that I wouldn't be seen. The game trail off to my right curved back around behind me following the edge of the patch of Laurel. The game trails to my left that converged into one Ran along the patch of Laurel and then faded off Into the Woods. Just as I was tucking myself back into the opening a light snow started and it started to muffle what little forest noise there was that morning. As I got comfortable my dad walked off down the trail to find himself a spot. Within 10 minutes I was sound asleep.
About 30 to 40 minutes later something woke me up, I didn't know what it was and it was still lightly snowing.Over behind me to the right where the one game trail curved around the Laurel I heard of a sniffing snuffling type sound. Almost as if a buck was sniffing the air and snorting a little bit looking for a doe. It sounded like it might have been 20 or 30' away but I couldn't see it because the way the game trail curved around the Laurel. I could only see the trail for 2 or 3' to my right.
I check my rifle I had a Remington .308 To make sure I had a round chambered for when what I thought was a buck was sure to come down the trail. As I listened I could hear it slowly moving towards me still making that snuffling sound it sounded kind of wet and sloppy and then after a particularly loud snuffling sound there was a light growl. At that point fear gripped my stomach because I know bucks don't growl so I thought maybe it was a bear.I tried not to panic because I know black bears are usually more afraid of people than anything so I waited. I could hear it very slowly coming towards me down the trail still making that snuffling type sound with a low rumble of a growl. About 1 maybe 2 minutes went by and it sounded like it might have been about 5' away but I still couldn't see it because of the Laurel when suddenly a doe blasted out of the Laurel off to my left about 10' away and raced down the trail to my left. Immediately the thing to my right stepped into my line of you and I could see it was absolutely massive. My dad was 6' 2" and weighed 280 pounds and was a heavyweight wrestler in school, this thing was half again as wide as my dad and about a foot taller. Its back and haunches were so massive and thick I couldn't believe it. It didn't see me because it was looking down the trail towards where the doe went and it was still snuffling the air like it was hunting. At this point I was absolutely paralyzed with fear my stomach was cramped and I felt like I was gonna pee on myself. I couldn't even blink and thank God I didn't because I was afraid it would see me if I moved even the slightest bit. It never hurried after the deer rushed out of the Laurel and ran down the trail it didn't change its pace at all let it kept sniffing and growling as it moved past me. I couldn't see its face except for the side slightly turned away from me. The skin on it's face reminded me of the leather of my baseball glove maybe just a little bit darker, but it kind of looked sweaty were a little bit greasy. I knew it wasn't a bear because bears don't walk on two feet and the hair didn't look right For a bear it was more stringy looking. What caught my attention about its head was its ear, it looked like a hole in the side of its head with just a little tiny flap of skin part way around it. I just thought it was funny when I was looking at it.What came to my mind as to what it looked like was the 6 million dollar man episode where he fought the sasquatch. Looking back I would say this thing was probably in the 500 to 600 pound range and it just seemed so thick. It had a funny smell not like a skunk or anything like that, just a very heavy musky smell almost like what you would expect for an animal that is in rut. And it's not like it stunk,It was just that unwashed animal smell.
I definitely felt this thing was hunting for a meal and thank God the deer jumped out when it did and kept its attention because I am sure at that point I would have become a missing person and possibly a meal for this thing.
It never really changed its pace as it went down the game trail the direction that the Doe ran. It was maybe 40 to 50' away from me when a shot rang out down over the ridge. It sounded almost like my father's 30-06. As soon as the shot rang out this thing quickly moved off the trail and crashed into the Laurel and disappeared from my sight.
I took a breath and was shaking so bad my stomach hurt and I did not know what I had just seen but I knew that I was terrified and wanted out of the woods. I didn't move because I was afraid that if I moved this thing would hear me and come back, and about 30 to 40 minutes later I heard noises coming backup the trail and I thought it was this thing coming back the way it came I squeezed back into the Laurel as tight as I could and closed my eyes praying that it would just walk right one passed me again. I could hear something coming up the trail but I did not wanna look and then suddenly my dad yelled you better not be sleeping come and help me drag this deer. I raced out to him and seconds later I started crying, he kind of gave me that look like what are you crying for he thought maybe I was crying because he killed the deer I didn't try to correct him otherwise he would have thought I was crazy if I told him what happened to me and would have just made fun of me like always.
I never ever told anyone about this until now, I'm 50 years old and I can still see and smell this thing if I close my eyes and think about it.
I never went hunting again and to this day I haven't.
