Yes it was a long time ago. But I remember it well. It was my first Boy Scout campery. The Scout Master & older Scouts will tell you the noises your hearing in the deep woods are from the Lost Scouter. That all Scouts shouldn't go into the woods past the Kybo because He's waiting for you there to take you to his troop of lost scouts. We set up camp in the dark because of the longer than planed trip (A car accident close the road) It was a drizzle cold & damp. But meaning the four Tender foots keep hearing these animal noises but they were near human like as well. We set up quickly & went to bed (As if the tent would harbor us if were wild animals) Thought the night Chop-chop-chop on one side of us Where the old growth pines stood. In the hard woods Knock a long pause & Knock again. Snarls whoops & grunts We awoke to two inches of fresh snow. Being not to learned of camping in general we as Tender Foots had to look for fire wood But one Boy found big Foot prints in the snow. We show the Elder Committee member that came He laughs "You Fellas just found a proof of the Lost Scouter" I know different now that foot didn't have shoes on. Hot Coco, eggs & bacon a boy soon forgets the noises & foot prints. Just after breakfast we learn that a Patrol of a different Troop cut down an old growth white pine. They were not going to be aloud to participate in the skills derby but they must cut up that tree into fire wood length by hand including the scouters So on one side of camp Chop-chop-chop The other side if one stopped doing you can hear Hoots with calls & Knock Knock
It's dark thirty Saturday evening The Troop is still chopping wood but the noises on the other side gets more pronounced. Even after tearing around until late I & my tent pardoner couldn't sleep because of worrying over those noises in the hard woods.
Sunday morning at Services we learned that a Troop packed up in the middle of the night due to tents being wrecked by several fallen two inch saplings (I don't remember it being windy that night) The Elder clergy thought it would be good to pray for them do to a boy got injured.
We had some time before we would break camp so a few of us talked to the troop camped next to the troop that left in the night. They were scared & wanted their Scout Master to call to break camp. The wild noises then the screams of terrified boys that night still rang in their ears. They took us where the other troop was. Those saplings were torn out of the ground some twenty feet from where they lay over where the tents were. Plus the snow was packed down by large feet where the saplings had stood.
I learned later at a Winter extravaganza that the troop that packed up in the middle of the night was no more. Boys & men quit because of that night Now there's no record of this at the Council But instead the troop was insolvent due to poor money management.
The troop that chopped wood all night is still going strong.
I learned through being a Scouter that most of the members of that scared troop will not go camping. Even in Tin Tee-pees
So know the area before you go camping. Use high traffic camp grounds Even in large groups the ground should be checked over.
